Rosner Wrap: Mathew Barzal Hypothetical, Huberdeau Gets PAID

Good morning and happy Friday. The longer time passes between moves for the New York Islanders, the more outrageous takes people are throwing around on social media. One take, that was not completely outlandish was about Mathew Barzal going to the Detroit Red Wings, but it’s not a move that would make the New York Islanders better.

On the latest episode of The Backcheck, I interviewed QMJHL head coach Jon Goyens, who did some fantastic things during the pandemic along with top-flight coaches such as former New York Islanders head coach Barry Trotz. We spoke about the Nazem Kadri situation, Mathew Barzal playing on the wing and Goyens also provided tips for hockey parents.

Here are the stories to know for today.

NYI Hockey Now: Colleague Jimmy Murphy threw out a hypothetical situation Wednesday regarding a Mathew Barzal trade to the Red Wings. The Isles could clear salary cap space, remain in win-now mode, while also addressing the future. Eh.

NYI Hockey Now: Last week, the New York Islanders announced the hiring of John MacLean, also announcing that Brian Wiseman would no longer be part of the coaching staff after signing on the first week of July. Could his resurfaced past have anything to do with the change?

Calgary Hockey Now: Just a couple of weeks after the shocking deal brought him to the Calgary Flames organization, Jonathan Huberdeau inked an eight-year, $84-million extension — the richest deal the Flames have ever handed out.

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: The Pittsburgh penguins need to avoid drama and sign netminder Tristan Jarry to an extension. He had a rather strong regular reason and despite being hurt, played in Game 7. If the Penguins wait, the price tag will rise.

Boston Hockey Now: The Montreal Canadiens and the Boston Bruins hate each other. Both original six teams, their rivalry goes back a long time. Colleage Jimmy Murphy describes what it’s like to cover both.

Washington Hockey Now: The first stop on Dru Krebs’ list when he returned to D.C. for the second time was Chipotle. There’s none of them up in Medicine Hat, his junior team that taught him quite a bit this past season. And after a burrito bowl and good night’s sleep, he made his way to MedStar Capitals Iceplex, ready to show the Washington Capitals how he grew over the last year.

Detroit Hockey Now: Fans hoping the Detroit Red Wings find another Steve Yzerman to finish off their rebuilding plan should know one will be available next June in Connor Bedard. But Detroit should be good enough to have no chance at the first pick.

Vegas Hockey Now: Welcome back to a mini-series here at Vegas Hockey Now, where we look at the Vegas Golden Knights current depth chart in specific positions. This series will examine the Golden Knight’s goaltending, centers, defensemen, and wingers. This can help us get a feel for what moves if any, general manager Kelly McCrimmon could make in the remainder of the offseason. Today, in the final installment of our series, we will look at wingers.

San Jose Hockey Now: Re-signing Mario Ferraro answers one big San Jose Sharks’ cap question. This is what their cap situation looks like after bringing back RFA Ferraro with a four-year, $13 million dollar contract.

Vancouver Hockey Now: The Vancouver Canucks behind-the-scenes 2022 NHL Draft and Development Camp video was entertaining and cautiously informative, while because of general manager Bill Guerin, the Minnesota Wild’s video was just as good in half the time.
