‘I’m not the Welsh Messi!’ Cardiff hockey great, 69, has miles left in tank

Steve Sparkes has built up a legendary reputation at Cardiff & Met Hockey Club. The hotshot forward has been compared to Lionel Messi and rumours circle about the exact number of cigarettes he smokes a day, both of which he is quick to refute.

The 69-year-old’s reputation is founded on genuine hockey prowess, which has seen the Welshman represent his country from schoolboys to the over 65s, including 13 full outdoor caps.

The veteran has scored close to 1,100 club goals and scored 59 in one season but Sparkes remains humble about his achievements, though he doesn’t mind a small brag about beating England.
