Waterless turf still a target for hockey by Los Angeles 2028 Olympics

World hockey’s new president Tayyab Ikram said the sport is aiming towards dry turf, perhaps in time for Paris 2024, but certinly by the time environmentally-conscious Los Angeles hosts the 2028 Olympics.

Pakistan-born Ikram defeated Belgium’s Marc Coudron 79 votes to 47 to become FIH president on Saturday, the second time in a Congress vote that the latter had been beaten.

With sustainability and the environment remaining a hot topic, as well as 10,000 plus litres of water needed for its international turf, Ikram said that the sport was on track to fulfil its desire to use water-free turf.
