Meinir Thomas stumbled across hockey completely by fortune. She has since captained her country as part of the Wales women’s Masters team, for which she signed up to four years ago. It has been a long, deeply personal journey to get to this point, but Thomas admits that it was the ‘best thing that I ever did’.
“My parents both died quite young and did not get the opportunities that they wanted from life,” she tells The Hockey Paper. “I also had a disabled child who I lost in 2007 and while he was ill I was out of hockey for years, and so now with all these opportunities I grab them with both hands and enjoy them, because you never know what is around the corner.”
How she got into the sport, she says, may resonate with many. As an eager netball player, her PE teacher sat her down one day and told her she had “no hope” of making the team due to her height. Why didn’t she choose hockey, she said.
