One of the best parts of my job is the travel associated with it. Flying into England this week, I was able to look at miles of unspoiled greenery, the splendour of railways snaking through the winding countryside, a throwback to the Industrial Revolution and surely one of England’s finest developments. And finally, banking over London and sweeping over the Lee Valley Hockey Centre, its magnificent blue pitches brightening up an otherwise dreary grey morning, clearly visible from 8,500 ft above them.
The British Isles is a stunning place. When I was younger, I had little appreciation of their natural beauty. They are now ageing with me like a fine wine. Assistant coaches are the same. The more you allow them to grow, the more you will get out of them.
Previously, I was an assistant and I know it isn’t easy. Great ideas, great enthusiasm, a popular face in the group but no pressure.
